A while back, I was freshening up in between work and meeting up with friends, when I realized I didn’t have all the beauty essentials I needed to create my usual ‘day-to-night’ look. With only a few random products in my makeup bag, it was clear I was going to have to get creative.
One of my favorite (and most used) beauty hacks is using lipstick in lieu of blush. This is a great trick to have up your sleeve when you’re on the go and want to pack light. While rummaging through my makeup bag, I quickly noticed I only had one lip product on hand; my Clinique Almost Lipstick in Black Honey ($17.50). Problem solved, right? Not exactly.
Not every lip product can double as a blush — it all depends on color, texture, and consistency. When using a lip product on my cheeks, I usually opt for creamy and soft lipsticks. I find that these blend easier, look more natural, and last all day long. And for the most part, I steer clear of lip glosses and liquid lipsticks. These tend to leave my cheeks sticky and even greasy-looking (and don’t get me started on how difficult they are to blend).
For anyone who’s used Clinique’s Almost Lipsticks before, you’ll know that it’s more of a tinted gloss than a true lipstick. Although I adore this product on my pout, this is the exact type of lippie I try to avoid using as a blush. Yet, in a moment of desperation, I slapped it on my face, crossed my fingers, and hoped for the best.
Spoiler Alert: I didn’t just like the results, I loved them!
Although this product has a glossy finish, it didn’t feel sticky or tacky against my skin. Unlike other lip glosses, Black Honey was actually quite smooth and creamy — blending easily and evenly across my face.
As for color, this product gave my face a healthy-looking, subtle flush. It applies somewhat translucently at first, but the tint is definitely buildable.
Insider Tip: Pairing the same lip and cheek color creates a cool monochromatic look that’s so in right now. What better way to match shades than by using the same product all around!
The gloss in this product was what I was most afraid of, because no one wants to look (or feel) like a grease ball. However, this was what I ended up loving most about the stick. Along with giving me a natural rouge, it also gave my cheeks a dewy highlight — making my skin look fresh, healthy, and radiant. If you’re a fan of the natural, bare-face approach, I highly recommend you try this out.
Didn’t Break Me Out
Whenever I test out a new product (or use an old product in a new way) I worry about how my skin will react — a side effect of having sensitive skin. The morning after this little experiment, I was positive I was going to wake up with a gnarly breakout. Much to my surprise, I didn’t break out at all. This was the ultimate cherry on top!
It’s safe to say that Black Honey has officially secured a spot on my very exclusive list of essentials.
